Please explore this site to learn more about IntraUterine Contraception.
There are many forms of birth control. One form is the intrauterine contraceptive. A small, often T shaped device is inserted into the womb.
There are several available, each with FDA indications. Some, such as the Paragard have a long history of safe usage. Many doctors, especially OBGyns, have special training to insert IUDs.
An intrauterine device, otherwise known as the IUD, is a form of birth control that is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are many types of IUDs in the world but at this time, only two types are available in the United States. One is the copper-T intrauterine device (IUD) and the other is the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG IUS).
Generally, the IUD is a small plastic T-shaped device with a string attached to one end. It is placed inside the uterus. Once placed inside, it prevents sperm from joining with an egg by making the sperm unable to go into the egg and by changing the lining of the uterus.
The IUD is the worlds most wisely used and inexpensive method of reversible birth control. Depending on the type, IUD’s can be effective for 2, 5 or 10 years.
This website is a directory of offices that offer the IUD. Just go to the drop down boxes above and click on your state or city and you will see a list of physicians who offer the IUD (and possibly other forms of birth control). You can also use the state by state list below to find a physician near you.
